My name is Derek Sup and I am a musician based in the bay area. I was raised in Gold River, a suburb near Sacramento, CA, and attended Willamette University in Salem, OR where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music composition in 2014. I have always involved myself in music of different styles (which has made organizing my output and creating this online portfolio quite a challenge), and love exploring different worlds of music-making and sound. My favorite instruments to play are the piano, organ, synthesizer and the guitar, and have had substantial stints on the vibraphone and other mallet percussion. Perhaps above all, though, I love to sing. Below are some of the musical endeavors with which I most involve myself.
I am the music director at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oakland, where I have been organ and directing the choir since 2015. I also started and currently direct a choir called the Free Key Choir, which is a 140-voice group of young adults, many of them songwriters and musicians. We perform choral arrangements of songs by folks in the choir, many of which I have arranged. With my friend Lewis Patzner, an incredible cellist and composer, I started a concert series in 2018 called the Glenview Classical Series which has put on monthly concerts for several years. I am active in the Oakland DIY music scene, and write songs and perform them under my own name and as Little Arcs. I have recorded piano, organ, and synths for many local artists recently including Katsy Pline, Josiah Johnson, Maya Elise and the Good Dream, and Stephen Steinbrink.
I hope you enjoy clicking around and listening to the various corners of my website, which was made possible through the deft programming of Scott Ledbetter and the illustrations of Mara Gerson.
