Spell Eternity (2017)

Produced by the Quantum Dragon Theatre Company, Spell Eternity premiered at Mojo Theatre in San Francisco in spring of 2017. Written by Alandra Hileman and directed by Sam Tillis, Spell Eternity, felt like a live enactment action Dungeons and Dragons for theater.

The synopsis from Quantum Dragon:
“Unlike her best friend Kai, a brilliant spellcaster, Gerda has no aptitude for magic. When a dangerous entity intent on decimating their world unleashes an ancient curse from myth, Gerda must use every mundane skill she can muster in a race to find Kai before the curse destroys his mind…and all hope of breaking the curse is lost with him.”

This play was full of live fighting and spell casting. In this world, spells are cast through singing. It was my job to come up with the melodies that would become these spells, and to create the tune for the prophetic folk song from which the story unfolds:

The lady walked along the banks
And begged the water tell her
Where her lover’s life had hid
And did he now forsake her
The river cried, “You’re love’s been ta’en
Beyond where I can see him
Oh seek him out and sing your love
Mayhaps you will redeem him
So ride the sky and ride the sea
Til roses are in blooming
And cross the world ere fall of snow
At last conceals the dooming”

Here’s my setting of that poem to song with Jacinta Sutphin singing:

Gerda’s Folk Song
